說明
1.
Participation
10%
It should be intuitive to you that classroom participation is the key to the success of a course. Please help me make this course better by giving me your input in class and also outside of classroom. I would really appreciate it if you could all actively participate in classroom activities and discussions.
2.
Homework
25%
Homework will be assigned accordingly. You should turn in the assignments typed. As will discuss homework in class, NO late assignments will be accepted.
3.
Summaries
25%
You are required to attend at least 6 talks throughout the semester, at least two of which need to be in the field of phonetics/psycholinguistics/computational linguistics, and at least two of which need to be in the field of syntax/semantics/pragmatics. You may choose whichever talks you are interested in. Notice that even for topics/subfields that you are not particularly interested in, you can still learn a lot from the speakers, e.g., the presentation style, the overall organization, etc. For each of the talks you attended, you are required to submit a one-page, typed, single-spaced summary. The summary should be no more than 300 words. You should NOT copy directly from the abstract/handout/Powerpoint provided by the speakers, but should instead try to digest as much as you can and come up with a summary on your own. You are especially encouraged to focus on the methodology of the research. All summaries should be handed in a week after the talk by 5:00 pm. Otherwise, they will be regarded as late. 10% of the grades will be deducted for each late day. The last summary to be turned in should be no later than 6/17.
4.
Term project
40%
You are required to pick at least two papers on the same research topic using different research methodologies, and compare and contrast the two, including perspectives, results, conclusion, etc. You will be given an 8-min presentation time slot on 6/10 for oral report—7 min for the actual presentation itself, and 1 min for questions and answers. During this time-slot, you are to highlight whatever significant findings you have found in your study. You can use whatever media you please but the style of presentation should be formal. You will be graded on both your presentation skills and audience responses, in addition to the content. The written report is due on 6/17, Monday, at 5:00 p.m. 10% of the grades will be deducted for each late day. It should be no more than a 10-paged, doublespaced, polished report incorporating the comments you have gathered in the presentation. The report should follow a formal format, and should include appropriate graphs, research details, and adequate interpretations.
